Meet The CEO: Indigo

Indigo

About Indigo

American Heritage Dictionary defines the word INDIGO as a hue of that portion of the visible spectrum lying between blue and violet; a dark blue to grayish purple blue.  As far back as Jocelyn can remember, she has always been in love with this exotic and intriguing color.  As a complex, multi-faceted personality who readily identified with the mystique associated with its beauty, Jocelyn adopted “Indigo” as her nickname many years ago.

Born Jocelyn Natasha; the first child born to George and Vivian Nelson (of Virginia) was four years old when her mother noticed that she could sing. The story is that her mom eavesdropped in awe while she belted out the Natalie Cole song, I’ve Got Love On My Mind. Indigo always knew she could sing, but she was actually quite shy and didn’t like the attention of solos.

Staying Determined

A couple of years later, her family moved from Charlottesville, Virginia to Maryland. Within two years of their move, her parents filed for and got a divorce. Her dad got custody of her younger brother and moved back to Charlottesville.  Saddened by her family’s fate, Indigo stayed in Maryland with her mom where she became an introvert. In turn, she started writing poems, short stories, and songs to release her emotions.

Indigo as a teenagerAs a teenager, Indigo and her mom moved into the Walker Mill section of Capitol Heights, Maryland…a known drug hood. It was very destitute; not the ideal environment for a dreamer. Although she became very self-sufficient by getting her first job at fourteen, she found herself becoming a rebellious reflection of her neighborhood. She attended three different high schools in four years and became quite a handful for her mom and dad; living back and forth between them. She knew her attitude had to change because underneath it all, she was a good kid.

A Beautiful Beginning

Indigo started attending an AME Zion church in Temple Hills, MD and joined the choir shortly thereafter. She still had solo anxiety, but she knew that her singing voice was special. She overcame her fear by singing lead during the step-show segment of her high school homecoming, kick-off event. She received a standing ovation.  That moment made quite an impact on Indigo. The stage, the energy…it all felt right.

With the emphasis that her mom put on education, there was no way that Indigo was going to approach her with the prospect of singing professionally instead of attending college. So, she juggled school along with pursuing a music career.  She joined a very talented girl group named 4BIDN. Indigo wrote numerous songs for the group and did much of their vocal production (check out a live performance of Indigo singing Real Love with 4Bidn).  Her fellow group members coined the term “Harmony Queen”, which referred to her beautiful, melodic, and intricate use of melody and harmony in song arrangements.

Following God's Direction

In 2002, Sylvia Rhone signed 4BIDN to a major recording deal with Elektra Entertainment Group.  Although they were dropped from the label and eventually parted ways, Indigo continued solo.  In between time, she graduated from Bowie State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology (Criminal Justice concentration).  In April 2004, she had a song placement on FRANKEE's debut album; THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY.  In 2005, Indigo decided that she didn’t want to sing anymore.  Although she loved music, she disliked the music industry…it’s a tough, male-dominated business that wore down on her spirit.  In April 2006, she dedicated her life to Christ and joined a church named About My Father's Business Outreach Ministries in Washington, D.C.  She joined the choir and subsequently, God renewed her desire to pursue music again.  This time her songs reflect her testimony and her walk as a believer.

In 2007, she acted on a divine vision and launched a Christian-based website JesusGroupie.com which specializes in creating a network and platform for hip, talented, urban believers; as well as offering a Christian alternative to trendy “slogan-wear” and jewelry.
